This is a British Museum/Bibliotheque Nationale publication which will eventually cover the Greek imperial and Roman colonial coinage for the entire empire in 10 projected volumes. The first publication of Volume 1 in 1992 initiated a new conception of Roman coinage, presenting for the first time an authoritative and systematic account of the coins minted in the provinces of the empire, and showing how they could be regarded as an integral part of the coinage minted under the Roman emperors. The full projected international series of ten volumes is intended to give a complete picture of the material, thereby not only meeting the needs of numismatists but also providing an essential reference for historians, epigraphists, archaeologists, and other students of the Roman empire.

The local coinages of the Roman Empire produced by numerous provincial mints, principally in the eastern provinces, have, in the past, seldom received individual attention. These coinages have traditionally been treated as the final phase of the Greek coinage (hence 'Greek Imperial') and have appeared in catalogues of Greek coins where the primary arrangement is geographical. Hence, the chronological significance of the series had been largely obscured until the appearance in 1992 of the first volume of "Roman Provincial Coinage". Now, both volumes I and II are OUT OF PRINT. |
