FRANCE. Napoleon III, 1852-1870. Vermeil Pattern 5 Francs, 1853 A. |
| Description: |
Vermeil Pattern 5 Francs, 1853 A. Bare head l., full French titles By the Grace of God and the National Will. Rv. Unusually elegant crowned Arms on mantle, Emperor of the French. When he proclaimed the restoration of the Empire, Napoleon III planned to use these titles plus that of King of Algeria (his uncle, after all, had been King of Italy). After public discussion, the Algerian title was dropped and on circulating coins a simple NAPOLEON EMPEREUR was held sufficient. Maz.1630a, VG 3321, Gad.727. Plain Edge, a few hairlines can be found in the fields. The Vermeil process is a form of exceedingly delicate gold plating or deposition that created the pale, clear gold that overlies this coin's gleaming mirror fields and devices. Brilliant Proof. (5,000-7,500)
