Copper. Reeded edge. Obverse with Morgan’s popular design, as adapted, E PLURIBUS UNUM arcs above Liberty’s portrait, date below, stars flanking seven left, six right. The reverse is similar to the adopted design but with three leaves on the branch in the eagle’s talon. Fiery deep orange with lively rose, electric blue, and orange toning highlights. A tiny spot is seen in the field near the juncture of Liberty’s hair and forehead. A popular pattern issue, or as Dave Bowers noted in his recent update of the Judd pattern reference (July 2003), "Patterns for the Morgan silver dollar (J-1550 to 1553) have always been in demand from collectors of regular silver dollars as a nice ‘go-with’ for a specialized cabinet.” If past performance records are any indication, we expect this attractive gem Proof example of Judd-1551 to draw an impressive amount of bidding activity before this "go-with” finds a place in an advanced Morgan dollar cabinet or specialized pattern collection. |
