Name: Venice - Italy, Giovanni Dandolo (1280-1289 A.D.), AR Grosso - Contemporary Counterfeit (20 mm, 1.29 g) Christ Enthroned VF
Description: Venice - Italy, Giovanni Dandolo (1280-1289 A.D.), AR Grosso - Contemporary Counterfeit
(20 mm, 1.29 g) Christ Enthroned VF Obv: IO DANDVL SM VENET DVX, Doge (duke) stands
facing receiving banner from patron saint St. Mark; the word DVX is to the immediate
right of Tiepolo and it is going down vertically along with the banner. Rev: facing figure
of Nimbate Jesus Christ Pantocrator, enthroned, IC XC field to the left and right. Trefoil
bellow Christ feet. Nice VF struck on large flan of same size as official Venetian
coinage. Contemporary counterfeits in the name of Doge Giovanni Dandolo are very rare. The
most copied type of grosso is the type in the name of doge Lorenzo Tiepolo (see
interesting article by David Metcalf in Numismatic Chronicle - 'Echoes of the name of
Lorenzo Tiepol imitations of Venetian grossi in The Balkans', 7th series, vol. 12 (1972),
p. 183 ff.). The coin presented here is of good style, and very light in weight (one
third less than the standard weight), but it is struck on very thin flan. The size of the
coin is equivalent to the original coins, thus making it very difficult to detect as
forgery (opposed to the other contemporary counterfeits being smaller in size). Probably
minted in medieval Serbia because it is very similar in style to the officilal Serbian
coinage.Nice VF and rare. Detailed description obverse/reverse: Obverse: The
bare-headed ruler with a beard and moustache is dressed in a robe decorated with precious
gems or pearls in two vertical rows, holding in his left hand a scroll (akakia) and with
his right hand he receives a banner from St. Mark. The saint with beard and moustache and
a granulated nimbus encircling his head, dressed in usual sticharia and a short mantle,
holds in his left hand on his chest the Gospels decorated with five gems, and with his
right hand extends a royal standard - banner. Reverse: Christ with a granulated nimbus
encircling his head in the usual robe (hiton) and mantle (himation) is seated on a throne
with a high back support. With both hands he holds on his left knee the Gospels ornamented
with five precious stones. Initials IC-XC at the height of his head.
