Name: 1870 pattern dime. J-828, P-918. Rarity-6+.
Description: Copper. Plain edge. Barber's Liberty Seated design obverse, Standard Silver agricultural
wreath reverse. Satiny golden red devices and mirror fields show a deep and lovely
blending of gold and blue-green with a hint of rose and violet in the protected areas.
Another rarity from the Standard Silver pattern series of the era. Not an extreme rarity
within the context of the pattern series, but at High Rarity-6, J-828 earns respect and
admiration for its elusive nature; the last recorded appearance of this variety at public
auction was January 2000, four years ago! NGC has certified only four examples of J-828 in
all grades, none of which best the present coin numerically (they have graded a Proof-66
RB specimen, however). Whether you collect dime patterns, copper patterns, or the entire
Standard Silver series, the present coin will make a grand addition (or perhaps an
upgrade) to your pattern cabinet.NGC Census: 2; none finer within the designation.
Price: $2,590.00 (2004-01-05)
