| Name: |
English, Richard III, AD 1483 to 1485. Silver groat. An interesting muling of mint marks. |
| Description: |
Denomination : Silver Groat. Mint : London
Mint Mark : half sun and rose (1) on the obverse and half sun and rose (2) on the reverse. This appears to be a muled coin, as coins with the sun and rose (1) on the obverse will normally also have sun and rose (1) on the reverse.
Date : 1483 to 1485.
Reference : Neither Spink or North list this mint mark combination. Spink #2156 mentions mules often occure between the Sun and Rose (1) and the boar's head mint marks, but there is no mention in any of my references of a mule between Sun and Rose (1) with any of the other Sun and Rose (2) or (3) marks.
Size : 24.7 x 26.3 mm. Weight : 2.96 grams.
Grade : VF with a nice old collection tone. No evidence of clipping.
Obverse : Head of Richard III forward, with RICARD DI GRA REX ANGL Z FRANC around. Parts of some letters are off the flan, as is almost always the case on these, and the inscription is more complete than usual.
Reverse : Long cross with two circles of inscriptions. The inner circle reads CIVITAS LONDON. The outer circle reads POSVI DEVM ADIVTORE MEVM (meaning I HAVE MADE GOD MY HELPER). |
