English Medieval Coin Hoards I: Cross and Crosslets, Short Cross and Long Cross Hoards by M. M. Archibald and B. J. Cook
This volume is the first in a new The British Museum series entitled English Medieval Coin Hoards. It publishes for the first time a group of hoards of the Cross and Crosslets, Short Cross and Long Cross coinages of the period 1158-1247, amounting to a total of 15,450 coins. The hoards give new insights into these coinages, notably the impact of the 1173-4 revolt against Henry II, and the nature of the currency in the early years of the Short Cross issue. Above all it gives full details of the massive 1969 Colchester hoard. The first part of this, deposited in 1256, provides the best evidence in print on mints and moneyers of the earlier years of the Long Cross coinage, while the nature of the second part, added to the hoard in 1268-78, increases its historical significance through its likely connection with the Jewish community in Colchester. vi, 170 pages including 22 fine plates + illustration in text (British Museum Occasional Paper 87, 2001) ISBN 0861590872.
