Name: 1870-CC 50C No Drapery.
Description: Bold lilac-gray with some electric blue highlights in the protected areas. Devoid of marks
of consequence save for one small diagonal "hit" in the field near Liberty's
pole arm. Other than that, contact marks are few and far between. Just 54,617 half dollars
were coined in Nevada's capital city in 1870, making for the lowest half dollar production
figure from that mint from the inception of the denomination in 1870 until its final
appearance in 1878. It is important for us to note here that while EF-45 is not an
extremely important grade for many coins, here it is of the utmost importance. NGC has
only certified six EF-45 1870-CC half dollars, and that firm has seen fit to certify just
a solitary specimen finer than that presented here. The grade of that finer specimen? It
is the only Uncirculated example of the date certified by NGC, and has been designated
MS-62. If you want an example of this date that is not quite MS-62 but is finer than
EF-45, you currently will not find it in a NGC holder. With that in mind, if you have even
a remote interest in this attractive rarity, we suggest you formulate your bidding
strategy early. A classic rarity in a classic collector grade.NGC Census: 6; 1 finer
(MS-62).
Price: $14,950.00 (2004-11-30)
