Name: 1872 pattern quarter. William Barber.
Description: Silver. Reeded edge. A truly splendid gem Proof example of one of the most desirable and
beautiful of all pattern coinage design types. Frosty motifs and deeply mirrored fields
form a heavy cameo contrast, though such is not noted on the PCGS holder. The obverse is
mainly vivid electric blue with splashes of rich violet iridescence in and around the
central motifs, while the reverse affords a burst of bright gold which gives way to
concentric rings of violet, deep blue, and electric blue. Barber’s bare-breasted Liberty
and her familiar American bald eagle dominate the obverse design, while another
interpretation of the eagle is the crowning glory of the reverse design. Just three
examples of this rarity have been certified by PCGS, with the present specimen being the
finest certified by that firm. If you are currently in active pursuit of the finest
patterns available to today’s collecting community, you will do well to consider this
coin. It offers an outstanding combination of beauty, rarity, and history, and would
easily be a highlight in any pattern coin collection.PCGS Population: 1; none
finer.Obverse: Barber’s depiction of Seated Liberty to left, flowing hair and Phrygian
cap atop her head. Her left arm rests on a tilted federal shield, her left hand holds a
broad sword that cuts diagonally across the shield. Her right arm is extended, her right
hand atop the head of a bald eagle, partly hidden by her legs. Seven stars arc to her
left, six stars arc behind her, the date is below.Reverse: Central eagle motif, the eagle
facing left, beak open and wings partly spread. The eagle’s left talons hold the top of
a federal shield, with a ribbon draped diagonally across the shield that reads IN GOD WE
TRUST. The eagle’s right talons clasp three arrows, while the foot and shield rest on a
small torse. UNITED STATES OF AMERICA arches above and around the central motif, with a
six-pointed star at either end of the legend, and with QUAR. DOL. curving below.
