Name: (1805) Washington Eccleston medal. Baker-85. Bronze.
Description: 76.1 mm. Highly glossy dark chocolate brown with maroon highlights, somewhat lighter on
the reverse than obverse. A beautiful specimen of this popular early Washington medal,
showing smooth and attractive surfaces and a minimum of flaws. Slightly double struck on
the standing Indian on the reverse, not an uncommon occurrence on this medal, and showing
some light natural pits around the central reverse, a byproduct of the casting of this
large-module planchet before striking. Some fainter pits, as usual, are seen here and
there. The overall visual appeal is superb, with excellent sharpness and detail, and this
piece would be at home in a nice cabinet of early American medals. From Presidential Coin
and Antiques' sale of December 2005, Lot 251.
Price: $1,495.00 (2006-09-21)
