Name: 1872 pattern half eagle. J-1241, P-1383. Rarity-7-.
Description: Copper. Reeded edge. Mottled iridescent and magenta toning over copper surfaces. The
reverse is the famous "Amazonian" eagle by Chief Engraver William Barber, as
found on the Amazonian pattern silver issues of the same year. The obverse is a
distinctive portrait of Miss Liberty, also by Barber, found on the illustrious set of
patterns complete from the dollar to the double eagle, unprecedented in American coinage.
A unique set exists in gold (it was displayed last October at the Atlanta Coin Expo
sponsored by Whitman).NGC Census: 1; 4 finer within any designation (Proof-65 BN finest).
