(ca. 1784) plugged 3,200 reis on Portugal 1734 host. Fr-88 (Portugal), Pridmore-5 (not attributed). |
| Description: |
7.02 grams, 25.20 mm. Central gold plug on Portugal host, but without countermarks. Medium gold with coppery toning at peripheries, some faint hairline scratches. Plugged at center with a gold insert, now roughly 3.5 x 4.7 mm. A remarkable piece, privately brought up to precisely the New York 1784 standard for a half joe (i.e. 3200 reis) -- exactly the 108 grains demanded by the New York Chamber of Commerce and the Bank of New York for a full weight piece! This piece was never clipped and retains full edge devices. Weight standards for Portuguese gold varied across the New World, but most Caribbean regulations dictated only that the coin surpass a certain weight (like 180 or 204 grains), not be brought up to full weight like this one. While unsigned and keeping some of its secrets, this plug was most probably intended for American circulation. ($1,500-2,500)A reproduction of the table published by the Bank of New York in 1784 appeared in The Colonial Newsletter, September 1981, p. 755. We reproduce the same chart on these pages; Swoger reports that these values, published by the Bank of New York, first appeared in print on June 7, 1784 in The New York Packet. From Stack's sale of the Col. James W. Flanagan Collection, March 1944, Lot 348.
