Name: 1879 pattern dime. J-1584, P-1777. Rarity-6-.
Description: Silver. Reeded edge. A superlative gem specimen of one of the most acclaimed issues in the
long history of American pattern coins. The surfaces are entirely brilliant, with deeply
mirrored fields and finely frosted motifs that define the Cameo designation. The
"black and white" contrast is dramatic at arm's length and impeccable up close.
Strike is usually a significant concern for Washlady dimes, as most show severe flatness
on Liberty's hair. This example is not entirely immune from that phenomenon but the strike
is far better than typically encountered, with most of the hair nicely defined. As strike
is more of a concern than technical grade on this issue (most are fairly nicely
preserved), savvy collectors should pay careful attention to this piece. The reverse,
which also sometimes suffers from dramatic softness is entirely defined here, just a
little flat on M of DIME and a few of the beads below. This specimen is certain to be a
highlight in its next owner's cabinet.NGC Census: 1; none finer within designation.
Price: $13,800.00 (2004-03-09)
