Name: Mexico. 1732 (F) 8 reales. Mexico City mint. Fine.
Description: 26.11 grams. Pleasing silver gray on a nearly square planchet, a shallow patch of
encrustation above reverse shield, good date with 1 weak and 732 exceptionally bold, cross
nearly full, excellent visual appeal. Scarce with such a full date, this year is important
as the first year of the Pillar coinage and the last year of cobs at Mexico City, though
the transitional "recortado" pieces would be struck through 1734. An interesting
piece from this wreck, one better known for the Dutch coins on board than the
Spanish-American silver found in its wreckage. Offered with a Xerox "Certificate of
Origin." (Estimate: $175-275)Purchased from James Vorus/Escudo Ltd.
Price: $138.00 (2004-01-05)
