| Description: |
Lustrous silver gray with rich golden highlights around devices and across the reverse and a splash of blue at the date. Very boldly struck, with impeccable detail on both sides and the usually flat star 4 better defined than often seen. Only trifling marks, faint horizontal scratch under chin noted for future identification. One of the very best of this rare variety, by a long shot the scarcer variety of the two die marriages from this date. The lustre is nearly complete and the eye appeal is superb. Die pits in usual locations in left obverse field and beneath E in AMERICA on reverse, several light reverse die cracks. An important offering for the dime specialist, Condition Census for the variety and far better than usually encountered for the date as well. A coin that could be the centerpiece of an important collection of early American silver coinage.NGC Census: 3; 1 finer (MS-65). This is (presumably) the finest JR-2 certified by NGC. Though the other two pieces certified as AU-58 and the single finer MS-65 piece did not bear attributions, they are most likely of the more common JR-1 variety. From Heritage’s sale of August 1996, Lot 6940. |
