823.1 grains, 52.1 mm. This is the common Gorham Silversmiths issue with the wagon wheel on one side, nine lines of text on the other. A few hairlines from handling but no edge marks and the surfaces are toned with dark gray adhering to the lettering, light silver elsewhere. A lovely example of this popular issue struck during the wild Free Silver debates of 1896 that pitted William Jennings Bryan vs.Willliam McKinley. The American economy had slumped in 1893 and credit was very tight, banks cried for more greenback bills backed by gold, but gold reserves wouldn't allow an increase in the money supply, so many wanted the 16 to 1 equivalent of silver weight to gold to solve the problem by dumping silver coins into commerce. This was one of the most contested political debates of the period.
