Name: 1913 5C Type I. Matte
Description: A gorgeous satiny gem Matte Proof Buffalo nickel from the first year of the series, and
the only year of Type I coinage (the type was modified later in the year to eliminate wear
problems associated with the Type I or "Buffalo on mound” issue, as here). Bursts
of lively golden iridescence enhance the boldly struck motifs of James Earle Fraser’s
all-American design type. One of 1,520 Proofs of the date struck. Regarding this issue,
author David Lange noted in The Complete Guide to Buffalo Nickels, "As the first
examples of their type, these Proofs were ordered in large numbers. Their survival rate is
a bit lower than for other issues, since these coins looked so much like regular pieces to
the untrained eye that a number were probably spent. Others may lie unattributed as Proofs
in old collections. Gems are elusive.” A stellar example of the issue; PCGS has seen fit
to certify just one example of the date at a finer level. We expect that "herds” of
Buffalo nickel specialists will be paying special attention to this gem Proof beauty, so
why not gather your resources and join the hunt!PCGS Population: 33; 1 finer
(Proof-68).From the Richard M Collection of Proof Buffalo nickels.
