Name: Mexico. 1733 F 8 reales. Mexico City mint. Very Fine.
Description: . 25.68 grams. One of the most interesting and important types among crown coins of the
Americas, marking the changeover from hammered to milled technology. Pleasing silver gray
with darker gray fields providing excellent contrast. Boldly struck from circular dies on
a rhomboid planchet, straight across the top, perfectly vertical at right edge of obverse,
a trifle ragged at bottom edge, perfectly diagonal at left edge of obverse. A very
well-preserved example of this American klippe, struck for only two years and often
encountered holed. This assayer, with Mo mintmark above on left side of shield, is
considered the scarcest individual date-assayer variety of the 8 reales recortado issues
and often appears on these diminutive squared planchets. A lovely and very desirable
example. (Estimate: $500-1,000)From Coin Galleries' sale of February 1984, Lot 888 with
original lot ticket.
Price: $632.50 (2004-01-05)
