1836 Gobrecht. J-64, P-64. Rarity-8. |
| Description: |
Copper. Plain edge. Die Alignment III. A fantastic rarity, one of only three in existence. Pale orange-red mellowed from full mint brilliance, with subtle reflectivity and full lustre. Boldly struck to fully realize the design, a pleasing example of this great rarity. A tiny curled lintmark is present in the upper right obverse field, a dull nick under F of OF identifies this piece as the Carmichael example, sold by Superior in 1986. The other examples known are the impounded Byron Reed coin, owned by the City of Omaha, and the Farouk piece, graded Proof-64 RB by PCGS. This is one of the great rarities of the Gobrecht series, a rare pattern coined for special collector-clients of the U.S. Mint in the decades after the original coinage. For collectors of this fascinating series, few pieces could rival this one for overall desirability or rarity—there is only one other example that anyone could ever hope to own. A soon-to-be highlight in the cabinet of its next owner, no matter if that collector specializes in Gobrecht dollars, pattern coinage, or advanced rarities of the American series.PCGS Population: 1; none finer. Only one other specimen has been certified by PCGS.From Robert Hughes sale of January 1980, Lot 55; Superior Galleries' sale of the Hoagy Carmichael Collection, January 1986, Lot 1191; Bowers and Merena's sale of January 1995, Lot 484.
