| Description: |
Medium silver gray with deep gold and electric blue highlights at the rim. Some prooflike reflectivity is noted, especially on the reverse. One of the most spectacular repunched date varieties in all of American numismatics. The entire date was first punched too high in the die, the end result showing a date that seemingly appears to dangle from the rock base above. The numerals were only very lightly effaced from the die before repunching, so that the errant first date is plainly visible to the unaided eye. One of the most elusive Liberty Seated half dollar varieties, an issue that is avidly sought in any grade, including coins near basal state condition. The present coin is exceeded in grade on the NGC Census by just two examples, both of those at the AU-58 level. Some stray marks are noted, as should be expected for a coin that spent a modest amount of time in general circulation. However, on an elusive variety such as this, such circulation marks are easily and willingly forgiven. Bid liberally for this one, as an opportunity to obtain an example of this variety in such fine grade may not come your way again for a considerable length of time.NGC Census: 1; 2 finer (AU-58 finest). |
