| Description: |
27.00 grams, 35.50 mm. Type as above / crowned arms, garter around, legends, assayer, and mintmark around. Medium gold with rich toning at the rims, plenty of lustre on both sides but most abundant on the reverse, tiny scattered marks in fields, very attractive and natural in appearance. Better than any of the 8 escudos of the "rat nose" design type in the Gerber or Norweb collections. A very popular and highly elusive coin. Calico rates this date-assayer combination as very rare. ($4,500-7,500)From the John H. Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942. Plated in Waye Raymond's Spanish-American Gold Coins, 1936, and in serial form in Coin Collector's Journal, Vol. 1 #3, June 1934, p. 56.
