A lot of research has been done on these contemporary counterfeit British halfpence since Walter Breen catalogued this coin in 1975 as ''Not in Vlack, not in Taxay...First ever auctioned...only the second we have actually handled....'' Eric Newman made a case for the British manufacture and American circulation of the 1781 and 1785 dated contemporary struck counterfeit Halfpence in the ANS Museum Notes 33, where you will also find his die study of these coins. The attribution provided above is probably correct, although it is hard to say for sure given the rough, dark brown and lightly scratched surfaces of this coin. |
