1870 1C Doubled Die Obverse, 0 in Dentil |
| Description: |
Medium brown and essentially problem-free for such a well-circulated coin. An intriguing rarity, a variety that displays slight obverse doubling at IBERTY (here not so obvious due to the wear associated with the grade), doubling at the 18 in the date, and a misplaced 0 in the dentils below the 7! An amazing rarity, one of only two examples of the variety known to Larry Steve in 1995, though a few more specimens may now be known. The present variety was called by Steve "A multi-variety type of coin with three different categories on one side of the coin! Extremely rare.” "Co-discovered” by Vicken Yegparian (the Doubled Die Obverse details) and Jack Beymer (the misplaced digit detail). While not the finest coin in the Steve Collection where eye appeal is concerned, it certainly gets a nod from us where rarity is concerned—it might very well be the rarest variety in the collection! You may be surprised at just how much of a stir this little circulated Indian cent produces when it makes its auction appearance.Obverse 6: "Errant 0 is very visible in the dentils below. Also possible other digits below the 1. Minor doubling visible on IBERTY. Repunching visible mostly inside the loops of the 8.” Die crack at dateReverse T3-C: "Small curved line in the lowest oak leaf on the left wreath. Die crack from the rim at 7:00 into wreath. Die crack from wreath at 8:00 to the rim at 10:00.”Vicken Yegparian identified this doubled die obverse when he was a prodigious high schooler from New Jersey. Today he earns his living as a professional numismatist with a well-known New York City firm. He is also credited with discovering doubled dies in other American series as well as on coins of the nation of Colombia. |
