around, signature of Guerrero below / crowned eagle atop cactus, legends around, date of
proclamation in exergue. Bright yellow gold with a few faint hairlines on both sides. A
beautiful specimen, far finer than the ex-jewelry specimen in the recent Ponterio New York
International sale. Very rare in gold, and an important historical medal depicting the
"primero emperador" of Mexico. ($1,500-2,500)In the famed 1935 auction of Latin
American coins and medals from the Newcomer collection, this medal sold for 4 times the
price of the more expensive of the two Iturbide 8 escudo coins in the sale. Indeed, at
$200, this medal sold for more than all but a tiny fraction of the lots in the 744-lot
sale. From J.C. Morgenthau and Co. (Wayte Raymond)'s sale of the Waldo C. Newcomer
Collection, February 1935, Lot 419 ("Beautiful proof. Rare.") at $200; John H.
Clapp Collection; Clapp estate to Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr., 1942.
