Name: 1796 Washington Repub. Ameri. medal or "penny."
Description: 306.6 grains. 33.1 mm. Rich dark chocolate brown bronzed surfaces show exceptional
reflectivity and pleasing blue highlights around design elements. Very sharply struck with
details in Washington's portrait and the diminutive REPUB. AMERI. at central reverse nice
and bold. Free of marks and delightful to behold. A die break at the truncation of
Washington's bust likely caused the death of this die and its replacement with the second
obverse, listing Washington's birth and death dates. An exceptionally attractive Wyon
production, listed by Breen as a "penny" and often included in collections of
early American coins.Purchased from Harlan J. Berk.
Price: $690.00 (2005-12-06)
