Guinea, 1687. Second laureate bust l. Rv. Cruciform shields, scepters in angles. This date is somewhat crudely punched but is not the overdate that is also known for 1687. S.3420, Fr.295. Luxuriant overall lustre adds powerful beauty to an exacting strike, making this an ideal type coin representing this brief and troubled reign. James was Britain's last Catholic King and never abdicated. His son and grandsons maintained the Stuart claims to the crown down to 1807. After his overthrow by his daughter and son in law, James II lived in exile at St. Germaine en Laye, France, dying in 1701. Brilliant Uncirculated. (Est. $4,000-$5,000)
