Name: 1878 G$2.50 pattern quarter eagle.
Description: Designed by George T. Morgan, this coin presents a Liberty head with two hair bands,
drop-wing eagle over denomination 21/2 DOLLARS. This innovative 20.1mm Pattern was larger
but measurably thinner than the 18mm regular issue Quarter Eagles. The new size and
thickness were intended to eliminate the danger of hollowing out U.S. Gold coins and
refilling the space with less valuable Platinum of similar weight. All Patterns for Gold
denominations are rare and desirable, this experimental size and thickness example is
doubly so. NGC PF64.
