| Description: |
14.25 grams. Lustrous and attractive yellow gold with superb eye appeal for a coin lost a century after it was struck. Some minor abrasions are of no significant impact (unlike other coins where such marks imbue a matte appearance), tiny rim nick at 5:00 on obverse, nicely struck. A remarkable coin from this wreck—the Douro is mostly associated with mid-19th century coins but this sunken time capsule shows that earlier coins still had use as currency almost 100 years later. A fascinating example of a notable world trade coin whose purity and value still allowed its inclusion in commerce after the age of empires had faded. (Estimate: $500-800)From Spink's sale of the Douro Cargo, November 1996, Lot 49 with original lot ticket.
