Excellent cartwheel lustre on bright silvery surfaces. Some light field abrasions account for the assigned grade, but none are serious and the eye appeal is excellent. Boldly struck. A very rare variety, a Denver Mint product struck on a silver-clad planchet intended for use at the San Francisco Mint. Breen gave this off-planchet error a separate entry in his Encyclopedia and suggested that about 30 pieces were known, the first "discovered by a Las Vegas blackjack dealer.” The dealer announced his discovery in the October 10, 1974 issue of Coin World. Confirmation from the Mint of the variety was forthcoming, stating that the planchets were "rejected as unfit for Proof coinage” and shipped from San Francisco to Denver accidentally among a group of usual cupronickel blanks. The variety remains rare today, and is a distinctive variety among Ike dollars, now meriting mention in recent editions of the Guide Book. |
