Name: 1799 S$1. Normal Date
Description: Exquisite frosty lustre, the obverse lightly prooflike, with rich silver gray toning
yielding to slate blue at the obverse periphery and exhibiting mottled deep gray and blue
with subtle gold on the reverse. An exceptionally appealing specimen, boldly struck and
lovely to behold, likely among the very finest known of this variety called "a
notable rarity" in Mint State by Dave Bowers. Several clash marks noted, die state a
bit earlier than Bowers' state III, heavy die break past D in UNITED ends at eagle's beak.
In an extensive survey of sale catalogues, Bowers noted only four appearances of Mint
State specimens with the most recent in the 1972 Stack's sale of the S.S. Forrest
collection. For a dollar specialist or a type collector, the appearance of this piece at
auction is a serendipitous opportunity.
Price: $35,650 (2003-12-01)
