A spectacular offering of six original 1926-S Oregon Trail half dollars. All have been recently graded by NGC, in consecutive serial number holders as follows: MS-66 (3); MS-65 (3). While the serial numbers on the NGC holders suggest an original set, the aesthetic quality of this richly toned group confirms it without any doubt. Each coin is deeply toned varying degrees of silver gray with traces of blue, gold, russet and green mottled across both sides. A few have traces of the tab toning formation which is so highly prized, from having been stored long-term in the original mailing cards. Two tab-style card holders by Alan Eggers are included with the lot, both with the imprint of the Oregon Trail Memorial Association, Inc. The imprinted address on 28th Street in New York City has been changed to 95 Madison Avenue, rubber-stamped in blue ink. The cards exhibit typical bends and minor splits from removal of the coins, but they are clean and intact. The mailing envelope is also included, address to the President of Mid City State Bank, Gary, Indiana. The printed presentation letter, addressed to the bank and dated October 18, 1927, over the printed signature of Ezra Meeker, is also included as is a somewhat rough copy of the informative brochure on The Oregon Trail Memorial Association, Inc., and a wooden nickel from the Gary, Indiana Golden Jubilee. This group of coins and associated items was purchased by our consignor from the family of the banker who originally received them in October, 1927. (Total: 6 coins; 2 holders; 1 envelope; 1 letter; 1 brochure; 1 wooden nickel)
