In terms of tracking down superb pieces the 1922 Grant commemorative half dollar with star on the obverse is near or at the top of the list of challenges. The present coin, graded MS-66, is exceeded by only three others seen by PCGS. Even in high grade, Grant half dollars are apt to be unsatisfactory—with areas of soft striking and other problems. The grading is not made any easier by the surface of the dies. The fields were not finished but were left in a more or less raw state of processing, this being true of the Grant With Star and also the Grant No Star. All kinds of engraving lines can be seen under low magnification. |
