| Description: |
sharpness of Fine-15 or better but with tiny obverse marks and scratches. Medium silver gray with some faint golden highlights. Some scattered obverse marks noted, mainly tiny and grouped near the center, but entirely forgivable and difficult to find with the unaided eye. One of the greatly prized rarities in Canadian numismatics. Though 2,582,495 silver five-cent pieces of 1921 were reportedly struck in Ottawa, much of that mintage was never released and is believed to have been melted at the mint in an effort to make way for the new nickel five-cent pieces that would follow shortly in 1922. It is supposed that somewhere between 400 to 500 1921 silver five-cent pieces are extant, a figure that includes all grades from well-circulated AG up through a smattering of Mint State pieces. We suggest the present piece, slightly marred though it is, will be chased by more than one enthusiastic Canada silver five-cent aficionado, and that it then will become a focal point of another great collection of Canadian coins.
