1879 pattern half dollar. J-1599, P-1794. Rarity-6+. |
| Description: |
Silver. Reeded edge. Morgan's head of Liberty, virtually as adopted for the silver dollars of 1878-1921, reverse with a large perched eagle that resembles something more of Germanic origins than any eagle ever represented on U.S. coinage. Frosty motifs and deeply mirrored fields meet in stark contrast to each other, the whole with a warm champagne glow; some violet iridescence appears at the reverse rim. Some central striking weakness is noted (shades of the Morgan dollar series), but the overall quality more than compensates for the Mint's shortcomings. Perhaps a dozen or so examples of the variety exist, and no specimen of J-1599 has crossed the auction block since 1995 to best of our knowledge. One of just four examples of J-1599 certified by NGC, with the present specimen the finest among them. Patterns specialists take heed, for Morgan dollar enthusiasts are apt to join the bidding frenzy when this beauty crosses the auction block.NGC Census: 1; none finer.
