| Name: |
1879 pattern dime. J-1589, P-1782. Rarity-7-. |
| Description: |
Copper. Reeded edge. George T. Morgan's head of Liberty to left, virtually as adopted for the silver dollars of 1878-1921, reverse with unusual twin branch or vine motif, leaves in clusters of four around beaded circle with stars, E PLURIBUS UNUM and ONE DIME within. Bright red with lively orange, rose, and pale violet highlights. An attractive cameo gem, a splendid little dime that is as gorgeous as it is rare. The latest Judd reference notes that an example of J-1589 has not crossed the auction block since May 1993, so long ago that we suspect those collectors who desire an example of J-1589 have just about given up hope of ever obtaining one! Fear not, for ANR comes to the rescue here. Not only do you have an opportunity to bid on a beautiful example of J-1589, it is worthwhile for you to know that the present coin is one of just two examples of the variety certified by NGC within any designation. Perhaps just half a dozen or so examples of this rare variety are currently known. Rare, beautiful, desirable, and a timely highlight among the current pattern section. Pattern collectors are no doubt aware that serious collectors within the dime denomination as well as specialists in the Morgan dollar discipline are apt to cast an appreciative and desirous eye on the present coin, so please bid accordingly.NGC Census: 1; 1 finer (Proof-66 RD). These are the only two examples of J-1589 currently certified by NGC (November 2003).
