| Description: |
Satiny lustrous fields of a quality higher than usually seen. Contact marks are seen on the cheek, some of which may be from the original planchet. Somewhat lightly struck at the centers. Tiny, almost microscopic mintmark as usual. On this and on all 1921-D dollars the mintmark is tiny, almost microscopic. These pieces were made in an extreme hurry, with no attention whatsoever paid to details. In 1921 it was desired to turn out millions of silver dollars, without advance notice. At the Mint it was found that the models and master hubs had been destroyed (in 1910). Accordingly, an actual coin was transferred on a pantograph and used to make a new master, the details of which are laid out in Dave Bowers' Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States: A Complete Encyclopedia. All silver dollars of 1921 are thus somewhat differently configured than those dated earlier and differ in their details.
