1923 10 piece Proof Set in the original red box of issue. "First Coinage of South African Mint, Pretoria 1923." Gold Sovereign and Half Sovereign. Rv. St. George. Radiant but with a bit of hazing in the fields. Choice Proof; the silver 2 ½ Shillings shows mottled chestnut, blue, gold and slate patina over shimmering Proof fields, one of the nicest coins in the set; the Florin, Shilling and 6 Pence are partially white, with clean fields and speckled with chocolate patina; the delightful 3 Pence is radiant with light mottled pink and gray toning. The bronze examples (Penny, ½ Penny and ¼ Penny), have mellowed a bit but show spectacular rose and lilac toning over reddish brown surfaces. Mintage of 665. Choice to Gem Brilliant Proof.
