| Description: |
A frosty, satiny gem with bursts of mint brilliance vying with frosty powder gray, rich gold, and sea green for dominance on the obverse, while fiery peach dominates the reverse. Sharply struck, but with essentially full details present on both sides. As Dave Bowers noted in his monumental cataloguing of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, "Taken by itself, the reverse on this coin is among the top several finest we have ever seen on any Barber half dollar, regardless of date or mint, and especially significant as being a New Orleans Mint coin. For sheer purposes of numismatic enjoyment we invite in-person inspection of this piece at lot viewing." We couldn't have said it better. Fewer than a half dozen examples of this popular New Orleans issue have been called MS-66 by PCGS, with only two finer. A grand opportunity for an advanced Barber half dollar specialist to attach his or her name to the all-important pedigree associated with this beautiful gem.PCGS Population: 5; 2 finer (both MS-67).From Bowers and Merena's sale of the Louis E. Eliasberg, Sr. Collection, April 1997, Lot 2108.
