| Name: |
1881 pattern cent. J-1665, P-1865. Rarity-6+. |
| Description: |
Nickel. Plain edge. A splendid specimen, slightly cloudy and no doubt a candidate for conservation to make it a bit brighter (conservation can be done in a nice way, enhancing the value of a coin, and is a much different process from cleaning). The obverse depicts the portrait of Miss Liberty with a coronet, the same general style by William Barber as used later on the regular-issue Liberty Head nickel of 1883. The reverse follows the same theme, with a Roman numeral to indicate the value. This was one of several experiments during this era to standardize the motifs on minor coins.PCGS Population: 4; 8 finer (Proof-66 finest).
