Name: 1881 G$1
Description: An extraordinary gem Mint State gold dollar, both physically and aesthetically. Intense
lustre glistens brightly on rich, deep honey gold surfaces. A sharply struck coin in
virtually all areas of the design, with only a touch of weakness seen at the very tops of
the last feathers in Liberty’s headdress. From a circulation strike mintage for the date
of 7,620 pieces, of which no doubt thousands of Mint State specimens could probably be
accounted for today. In the eyes of PCGS, however, fewer than 20 examples of the date can
claim the assigned grade of the present coin! Harry Bass had a MS-68 example of the date
in his collection, and now you, the bidder, have the opportunity to equal the quality that
was fine enough for Mr. Bass. A true prize for the specialist or type collector.
Price: $8,913 (2003-07-25)
