Vivid iridescent toning characterizes the obverse—making it a magnet for anyone specializing in colorful toning. The reverse is fully brilliant. It is not unusual for Morgan silver dollars to have rainbow or other iridescent toning on the obverse (or reverse), with the other side of the coin being fully brilliant. This was caused by one side of the coin touching the interior of a canvas bag and acquiring toning through impurities in the canvas, as well as dampness and atmospheric effects over a long period of time. The inner side of the coin, protected, tended to retain its original brilliance.
