| Description: |
Among 19th-century coins there are not many gold issues with a circulation strike mintage of below 1,000 pieces, but this date is one of them! Only 640 pieces were made, probably none of which were saved, as numismatists of the era simply desired Proofs. Today, circulation strikes are exceedingly rare. How many are known cannot be determined, as all are so valuable that resubmissions to grading services have distorted the data. However, without doubt examples are very rare. This lovely 1881 is light yellow and retains significant mint lustre. The eye appeal is excellent. |
