Copper. Plain edge. Obverse and reverse motifs similar in style to the adopted types of 1883. Perhaps 50% mint red with blushes of delicate blue and violet. An aesthetic treat.,Pattern 1¢, 3¢ and 5¢ of 1881 were the first to bear the celebrated Liberty Head design by Charles E. Barber that subsequently appeared on regular-issue nickels coined from 1883 through 1912.In the Judd book, for patterns of this era the terms copper and bronze are interchangeable. Virtually all "copper” patterns were in fact struck in bronze. |
