A superlative cameo gem Proof eagle in every way. Frosty honey gold motifs and deeply
mirrored fields are alive with a faint rose aura, with finely chiseled design motifs that
nearly defy description, and with simply delightful eye appeal all around. One of either
40 (per the Guide Book) or 42 (per Breen's Encyclopedia) Proofs of the date struck, though
the actual mintage is pretty much a moot point as so few examples are available to today's
collectors; perhaps as few as 12 to 15 pieces currently exist. Of those, a few are
permanently impounded in museum collections and other holdings blessed with longevity. Of
the entire group of known survivors, the present coin has a fair shot at being the finest
Proof eagle of the date extant! NGC has not certified a Proof 1881 eagle finer than the
present coin in any designation, so it's a cinch you won't find a better coin in that
