| Name: |
1865 pattern quarter eagle. J-439, P-512 |
| Description: |
Copper. Reeded edge. Regular issue obverse and reverse designs from Proof-finish dies. The obverse displays about 50% mint color with blushes of blue and violet. The reverse is chocolate brown with pale blue highlights. A very rare variety with no more than a dozen examples thought to exist in all numismatics. Often it is the case that several years pass between auction appearances. This offering presents a very important opportunity for the aware advanced pattern coin or gold specialist—a coin combining both quality and extreme rarity.,Possibly from a copper Proof set dated 1865 and produced in this era, but not necessarily in the year indicated. The rarity of 1865 half eagles, eagles, and double eagles in copper suggests that some of the 1865 copper quarter eagle Proofs were distributed as separate items, rather than in sets. There was no "testing” or "pattern” purpose for making such pieces, and thus they can be enumerated among the numismatic delicacies, or, per Don Taxay, "pieces de caprice,” produced during the 1860s. |
