| Name: |
1865 pattern quarter. J-426, P-498. Rarity-7-. |
| Description: |
Copper. Reeded edge. From the regular obverse die of 1865 coupled with the regular reverse of 1866-1891. Rich chocolate mirrors support frosty electric blue devices; tilt this extraordinary pattern ever so slightly under a bright light source, and watch a fireworks display of incredible rainbow toning highlights. Uspatterns.com notes: "These and the other 'with motto' patterns of this date and also J-1863 and J-1864 are actually restrikes made circa 1869 and into the early 1870s and offered with restrikes of other denominations in complete sets." The website then goes on to note, "the first definite sales occurrence for an 1865 with motto set was in the October 1870 Mason & Company sale, the Fewsmith Collection. A possible earlier listing may be Cogan's September 1869 sale." Perhaps a dozen or so examples of this popular rarity are currently known, with the present gem being one of two examples of J-426 called Proof-66 BN by NGC, with no other example of this rare variety certified finer than the present coin within any designation.NGC Census: 2; none finer within any designation.
