Name: 1858 Flying Eagle Pattern. Small Letters, Laurel Wreath with 5 leaf clusters
Description: Judd 191. Snow PT 14 (Die Pair 2). (R-5 for the type, R-7 for the die pairing).
Copper-Nickel, Plain Edge. Choice Brilliant Proof. The obverse is the adopted regular
Flying Eagle obverse with Small Letters, while the reverse is similar to the laurel wreath
adopted on the 1859 Indian Cents but exhibiting 5 leaf clusters on each side of the bow,
rather than 6 as on the regular issue. Snow estimates about 75 examples of Judd 191 (Die
Pair 1) were included in the ''12 piece pattern sets'', with an estimated 10 additional
specimens produced of Die Pair 2. This coin's devices are fully struck and crisply
detailed and are surrounded by glasslike reflectivity in the fields. Iridescent rose and
gold tones augment straw gold surfaces, while an attempt to minimize a carbon spot in the
upper left obverse fields has left some minor hairlines in that area.
Price: $3,000.00 (2006-03-08)
