Name: 1858 1C Flying Eagle. Large Letters.
Description: A lustrous golden gem with mirror reflectivity supporting boldly struck devices. A prime
rarity in Proof with an enticingly small mintage, as recorded in the Bowers reference:
"No more than 50 to 100, possibly included as part of the 12-coin copper-nickel
pattern sets of the year (and this figure may be overly optimistic), plus extras. Until
1992 PCGS in its Population Report listed all Proof 1858 cents under the 'Large Letters'
category, thus distorting their apparent rarity. In actuality, the Large Letters is an
extreme rarity in Proof finish. While Proof 1858 Small Letters cents were included among
the restrike sets of 1858-dated patterns made in 1859-1861, most probably the Proof 1858
Large Letters were only distributed in 1858." Repunching noted at AMERICA. A classic
issue that should find a ready home in an advanced Flying Eagle-Indian cent collection.NGC
Census: 9; 3 finer (Proof-66 finest).
Price: $12,075.00 (2007-03-20)
