| Description: |
Reeded edge. Bright olive-gold with intense lustre and a great degree of appeal for the assigned grade. Three examples of this variety were recovered from the wreck of the S.S. Winfield Scott, which sank December 1, 1853 off the coast of California. Bob Leonard noted that this variety was "illustrated as current money on cover of Dye’s 1854 or 1855 cambist, valued at 48 cents; same cut used on cover of Hodges’ Gold & Silver Coin Chart Manual, also at 48 cents (circa 1858), later (1861) with value reduced to 32 cents.” |
